The criminal justice system is a set of practices used by the local and national governments to investigate criminal cases, make arrests, gather evidence, bring forth charges, raise defenses, conduct trials, render sentences, and carry out punishments.

It is the purpose of the criminal justice system to provide justice for all by protecting the innocent and punishing / convicting the guilty. The criminal justice system is also responsible for supervising custodial and community punishment, fine collection, and any other orders of the court.

Some of the future goals for the criminal justice system are:

Improve efficiency and effectiveness in brining offenses to justice
Increase confidence and trust in the criminal justice system
Increase victim satisfaction with the criminal justice system
Analyze, collect, and use quality data dealing with race disproportionality in the criminal justice system.
Increase criminal assets recovery

It is also important to remember that you have rights, and it is your lawyer’s job to protect those rights while you are being processed through the criminal justice system. The government must stay within and never break the structure of laws that protect an individual’s rights.
